Can AI Run a Restaurant?

Over the past year, AI has found its way into almost every conversation in hospitality.

Some people believe it will replace restaurant managers. Others think it's just another trend that will disappear in a few years. I don't agree with either.

Can AI run a restaurant?

 No.

Can it help someone run a restaurant better?

 Absolutely.

AI can help with:

  • Planning.
  • Scheduling.
  • Writing.
  • Calculations.
  • Marketing.
  • Inventory analysis.
  • Sales reporting.
  • Menu descriptions.
  • Training materials.
  • Customer responses.

The list keeps growing. But here's the problem. Restaurants are not spreadsheets. They're not software. And they're certainly not predictable.

Restaurants are groups of people working together under pressure.

A guest complains.

A delivery arrives late.

Someone calls in sick.

The kitchen falls behind.

Two team members disagree.

A new employee loses confidence.

None of these situations are solved by better prompts. They're solved by leadership

The best restaurant managers I've worked with weren't necessarily the smartest people in the room. They were the ones who could build trust. They knew when to push, when to listen and when to support their teams. They understood that culture isn't something written on the office wall. It's something created every single shift.

That's why I don't see AI as a replacement for managers. I see it as something much more valuable. An assistant. Every hour AI saves on reports, documents, scheduling or administrative work is another hour a manager can spend where they're needed most.

On the restaurant floor.

Talking with guests.

Coaching employees.

Supporting the kitchen.

Solving problems before they become bigger ones.

Because that's where great restaurants are built. Not behind a laptop. But through people. Technology will continue to improve. AI will become faster, smarter and more capable every year.

But hospitality has always been—and will always be—a people business.

The backbone of every successful restaurant isn't artificial intelligence. It's a capable manager who builds a strong team, earns their trust and creates an environment where people want to do their best work. If AI helps that manager spend more time leading instead of doing paperwork, then everyone wins.
